This module forms part of the program in Defence Intelligence Studies. Students therefore ought to take note of the purpose of the Bachelor’s degree of Military Science (BMil) programme focusing on Defence Intelligence Studies:
“The (primary) objective of this qualification is to equip selected officers of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), as well as of other defence forces, with knowledge, on an undergraduate level, with specific and applied skills in Defence Intelligence Studies and related disciplines, which lay the foundation for life-long professional and personal development. The (second) objective of this qualification is to promote the development of the critical outcomes demanded by the NQF on the level of a first degree. The (third) objective of this qualification is to present such depth to qualifiers in the study of Defence Intelligence Studies that it can form a basis for postgraduate study at the Military Academy. The (fourth) objective of this qualification is to provide the SANDF with better-equipped officers.”
The module is divided into focus on counterintelligence theory as outline by Prunckun (2019) in the book Introduction to Counterintelligence Theory and Practice. Sims (2009: 157) is of the contention that - “In a competition there are two ways to achieve decision advantage: either by collecting better information on the contest than your opponent, or by degrading your opponent’s information while protecting your own. The latter is called counterintelligence and it comes in two forms, offensive and defensive.”
